Reddit out, documentation in – change in ChatGPT citation results

ChatGPT nuked Reddit (and most review sites) from its citations this summer, all in favour of official documentation, moderated marketplaces, and trusted brand publications. Here’s what it means for coaches & trainers.

/Based on data from Promptwatch + recent X analysis shows a massive shift in ChatGPT’s source selection over the last ~10 days:

  • Reddit went from ~3.8–15% of citations → effectively 0–0.5% (86%+ drop, cliff on Aug 14).
  • Review sites (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot etc.) also collapsed to near zero.
  • Small company pages/blogs dropped hard (from ~66% → ~32%).
  • Winners: Official docs & help centers (~32%), established trusted brands (Salesforce, Google, Shopify, IBM etc. ~18%), and moderated app marketplaces (~17%).

This tracks with OpenAI’s recent “query fanout” changes. ChatGPT is now more aggressively favoring high-authority, moderated, first-party sources over user-generated forums and long-tail sites.

What this means for coaches and trainers

Reddit marketing shouldn’t be the only thing you do for AI visibility

Seeding threads, helpful comments, or running Reddit strategies purely to show up in ChatGPT answers is not the #1 ROI magic trick anymore.

Should you still be on Reddit as a coach? Absolutely, if that’s where your target market is! Search and citation algorithm fluctuates all the time, and you shouldn’t make abrupt changes to your marketing strategy based on it. Do what makes sense for you and your brand, and the visibility will catch up.

Your own website + official resources matter more than ever

ChatGPT is heavily weighting docs, help centers, and clear first-party content.

Update your site with strong, structured content (FAQs, detailed program guides, methodology pages, case studies with clear outcomes). Every paragraph of your content needs to answer a specific question and be easily citable.

Make your help/docs section excellent and detailed if you have one (customer support queries are one of the best sources of content ideas anyway, see this post by our founder Dzianis on more details)

Authority and trust signals are being rewarded

Established brands and platforms with moderation/ratings are winning big, since ChatGPT has “learned” to detect them, or at least matches your citations with an internal authority list.

Build (or strengthen) presence on reputable directories, app stores, or industry platforms.

Get mentioned or featured by bigger, trusted names in the coaching/fitness space.

Review sites have less AI visibility power too

G2/Capterra/Trustpilot-style sites aren’t carrying the same weight.

Again, you should not abandon hunting for reviews just because an AI visibility expert has told you so. Your reviews are what helps convert and build trust, but keep in mind there’s a lot more sense in turning them into case studies and testimonials on your website.

This is an opportunity for clean, high-quality coaching brands

Coaches who publish clear, original, well-structured content (without relying on forum noise) are now better positioned. Fluffy or purely UGC-driven strategies have less weight for now.

Bottom line for coaches/trainers:

Stop treating Reddit as a primary AI visibility channel.

Double down on your own domain authority, official documentation-style content, and genuine authority signals.

The brands that look most “official” and trustworthy are the ones getting cited.

The game is shifting fast from “get talked about on Reddit” to “be the clearest, most authoritative source on the open web.”
